DIY Kitchen: The Base

In my last post, I commented that grandma was going to give me a free entertainment center, but I'm very impatient and simply couldn't wait for that (she lives sort of far away from me).  So on ksl.com (its very similar to cragislist.org but its local to Utah and Idaho) I found an entertainment center that was PERFECT for $30 and the man was nice enough to deliver it!  I am in the process of painting it currently (see pics below of my progress).
Cost breakdown: $30 for entertainment center, $40 for paint, painting supplies, and hardware like new handles and hinges.  so that is $70 for the base of the kitchen.  I'm hoping to do the kitchen in $100 or less and then all the accessories including food, accessories, etc for under $50.  I'm on track so far!

The entertainment center:
so on the right is a glass door covering some shelves, this will be the fridge. On the left is a tiny door that is currently used to hold CDs, I will be turning this into a broom closet/apron hanger area.  The cupboards on the bottom will be an oven and dishwasher.

You can see the broom closet easier here, and the side of the entertainment center which has shelves that will be turned into a pantry! woot.

The lighting is terrible here, but that is the glass door.  I painted it metalic silver and in better lighting it looks AWESOME! I will need to find contact paper or a clear coat to go over the top I think to avoid chipped paint.

I am painting the entertainment center black, with silver appliances, and pink trimming here and there (Addi saw pink paint at the store and even I couldn't resist the girly touch).

UPDATED PROGRESS-THE BASE IS DONE!!!
The whole base.

Broom closet/Pantry angle

Stove/Oven and Dishwasher (oh an a vase I painted silver)

silver fridge-no the handle is not gold, its also silver, it just reflected off my flash

Uh Oh.....its that time again

Its that time again:  The time where my creativeness flows and I become obsessive over some HUGE diy project for my daughter (ironically, these bouts of crazy generally come right before some holiday involving gifts--lucky me right?)

So what have I come up with this time?  A diy Play kitchen from some sort of furniture!!!

Addi has been asking for a play kitchen since last year.  So last xmas we got her a small plastic kitchen and it has been played with TONS!  Its downfall, however, is that she is a little tall for it now, and she has so many kitchen accessories that she can't put anywhere cause the kitchen has no counter space or storage space.   Naturally, this is a frustrating toy that should have years of play and added gifts (ie-more food, microwave, toaster, blender, etc).

Of course, I got the idea from pinterest and it just snowballed from there!

My original inspiration: http://pinterest.com/pin/110760472057226138/

Its SO cute right???

Okay so it just gets better.  I decide that I really want an entertainment center with a glass door. I also want an entertainment center bigger than 4 feet because my kid is tall and I want her to play with this kitchen til she is 11 or 12.  So, I go to facebook and my grandma happens to have one WITH a glass door she wants to get rid of that is roughly 5 feet high.  SCORE! (also shout out to gma for being cool enough to have facebook and even cooler to donate the entertainment center).

So I really have been thinking lots about her kitchen and how I want it to look.  I decided that black with silver is the most polished as well as the best color scheme to last her over the years as her personality ages. For the mean time, my kitchen will have some accessories that are pink (dark and light) because, lets face it, Addi LOVES pink (for now).   The plan is to have a silver fridge, a silver and black stove, a silver and black microwave, and the whole entertainment center structure will be framed in black.  i'm going to buy pink spatulas, plates, cups, etc from the dollar store.

I want to get a cute pink vase or pot with fake flowers to place on her "counter".

I also plan on spray painting some white wire racks from the dollar store to silver to keep with the polished look.   I know I want to do a backsplash in the kitchen, but I wont know what color(s) till I go to the hardware store.

The other part of this huge project I want to accomplish is new (or upcycled) everything for the kitchen (food, appliances, cookware, apron, oven mitts, etc).

So tonight, I decided to work on some food and WOW! I wish I had this stuff when I was a kid!!!

I really love the idea of felt/fabric play over plastic for a couple reasons: 1.I can make many things out of felt/fabric 2. usually plastic only becomes punctured, dented, painted on, slobbered on, melted (by me trying to do something too fancy), etc.  and 3. its great sensory play for babies/kids

Birthday Cake:

Supplies (ignore the bottles in the pic, they were for a different project)

Felt--$.25 cents a sheet (I used 4 sheets for the frosting and a few scrap pieces for decor)

Adhesive-I used my glue gun.  spray adhesive would probably work the same, maybe better

Styrofoam-2.47 for a small circle, 3.47/ea for 2 bigger circles (this stuff was more expensive than I wanted to pay and I'm sure I could have come up with a cheaper alternative, but the craft store was wearing on Addi's mood so I didn't spend much time thinking of an alternative--if you have an alternative idea, please share in the comments :)

Total-- $10.41

Start by cutting the smaller circle into fourths (this is sort of messy.  I used scissors to indent the foam then simply bent the foam til it snapped.)

Next, glue the two big circles together so they are one big tall circle.

I then took the big tall circle and covered it with white felt (choose whatever color you want).  I covered it by cutting out two big circles and covering the top and bottom then using scrap to cover the sides

Follow the same process to cover the 4 triangles you cut using the small circle.

I then glued ribbon to the insides of the 4 triangles to look like a filling--this is totally optional

Using scrap felt or whatever colors you want, cut out various shapes for "decorations".  Felt sticks to itself pretty well and obviously comes off easily as well.  Addi spent a couple of hours decorating her cake, serving it, and taking all the decor off only to start the process over again.

**food for thought (get the pun?):  You could skip the ribbon for filling and use the top circle (the one cut in 4 triangles) to vary between a pizza and a cake

I think i'm going to make a cake stand using the classic pinterest idea of a dollar store candle holder glued to a dollar store plate, spray painted pretty and voilla!

Various food:

I used felt and a glue gun for tons of food pieces tonight (not pictured: lettuce, buns, tomatoes, pickles, tortillas, cookies, beef for hamburger, beef for tacos).  You could always use a classic thread and needle rather than a glue gun.

Eggs and Bacon (the lighting sucks, the bacon is a brownish/dark reddish color).  The eggs are stuffed with scrap felt and the bacon is made by cutting rectangle strips and then pinching various places and holding in place with hot glue.

Last suggestion: You could stuff any of your food with various materials that make noise or feel squishy, etc for more of a sensory play element.

You know, I'm not great at this stuff and it takes a lot of time, but hearing Addison tell me I'm the "best mommy in the whole world" and playing with her new food for hours really makes this project so incredibly rewarding already.

I Cannot wait to start on the actual kitchen.  Stay tuned! Happy crafting!

DIY Barbie Fridge, Sink, and Garden

I will say officially that duct tape, hot glue and cardboard are my best friends. :) I am less than a week away from presenting this dollhouse to my daughter and she is going to FREAK!

For the fridge I used:
a lasagna box
duct tape
foam board
scrapbook paper
toothpick
beads
Magnets

Yes, you do see paint on my leg. lol

I also made a very imperfect garden today.  I was one square of grass short (don't you hate that?) so I will have to go buy another sponge :/  I used popcicle sticks, beads, tops of sponges, and sample carpet from home depot for the dirt.  In the grass area I am going to put a slide and a dog house.

**Picture loaded** Barbie Closet, Bunk Bed, Couches, Bookshelf, etc

Tonight was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FUN!

Please see my awesome pictures below. Yes, I did MAKE all of this with stuff laying around the house. Please don't make fun of the background of the pics (aka by bathroom)...that is the room with the best lighting.

Living Room Stuff:   I came up with the couches all by my big girl self! I really wanted Barbie to have a sectional to go around that photo box I bought from the thrift store. I really just pieced it all together and couldn't be prouder. The coffee table was an item bought from my local thrift store for 50 cents. It was an old jewelry box. I painted it white and walla! The Bookshelf was SO easy and make (see below) and it will be the perfect spot to add detail in my (I mean my daughters) Barbie house. You will also see in the pics a fire place.  This was also a thrift store item for $25 cents or so and I just painted it white. It used to be some sort of plaque I think? Wanna learn how to make all this stuff? Scroll to the very bottom :)

The Teenager's Room (aka skipper or stacey):  This room was very very easy and I love the results. I made a bunk bed (using the bottom of a shoe box), and a closet/wardrobe (complete with a purse rack). I got both the ideas from youtube videos (scroll to the very bottom if you want to learn).  I still need to make pillows and blankets (maybe old burp cloths?) for the bunk bed and I need to make hangers that are  big enough to go around the rod in the wardrobe.  I also made a lamp for this room.  Very in love so far.

How to Make:
Couches

  • Supplies: sponges (the quantity depends on the type of couch you want), cardboard, fabric, cotton balls (or stuffing) hot glue gun.
  1. Glue the sponges together (I made mine so that the hard top of the sponges were glued to each other, that way the top and bottom of my couch were soft and cushioned).
  2. cover with fabric, glue fabric in place. Make sure the fabric is nice and tight so the lines look clean.
  3. Cut out the back of your couch using card board
  4. Cover loosely with fabric and glue 3 sides in place, leave one side open to insert cotton balls/stuffing
  5. glue last side in place
  6. glue the back onto the bottom
Bookshelf:
  • Supplies: shoe box lid, cardboard (or foam board or Popsicle sticks), hot glue gun
  1. First think of the layout you want for your bookshelf.
  2. cut pieces from the cardboard (or equivalent) for the shelves
  3. glue in place
  4. spray paint if needed (mine is spray painted)
  5. **note that the bookshelf is light weight and can easily tip over. mine stays up just fine when its against a wall
Wardrobe:
I still need to add a mirror to mine. Also, my box wasn't as large as hers.

BunkBed:
I used duct tape instead of scrap paper. I also glued my "mattresses" to the bed. I cut out a window for fun.  I used dowels bought at walmart for the ladder (covered in duct tape).  I didn't put my bed on water bottle lids.

Lamp:
  • Supplies: toothpick, bottle cap, sauce cups from mcdonalds, beads
  1. glue a bead to the bottle cap
  2. insert toothpick in the bead (I put glue on my bed, then inserted the toothpick for extra support)
  3. bead toothpick almost to the top
  4. poke a hole in sauce cup, place on the toothpick
  5. glue 1-2 more beads on top so that no toothpick sticks out

No Sew Barbie's Bed (So proud of myself)

THE COOLEST PROJECT EVER!

Supplies:
4 Pencils unsharpened
Cereal Box big enough for barbie
rectangle shaped White fabric (I used an old shirt and cut it)
Cardboard
duct tape
stuffing

1. cut a headboard using cardboard, cover with duct tape
2. Place fabric on top of cereal box and duct tape 3 sides down
3. stuff the open side of the fabric so that it creates a matress look, then duct tape this last side down
4. cover your pencils with duct tape
5. duct tape the box all the way around, inserting the pencils as you go, repeat so there are 2 layers of tape
6. duct tape the head board on

Walla! Barbie's bed.  I'm going to make some pillows and a comforter too. LOVE this piece of furniture!

Side Project-DIY Nail Polish Rack

Found the inspiration for this idea on youtube (yes...I am an internet junkie).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-QmkFhLfHg&feature=youtu.be

the problem is I don't have enough nail polish to fill up that big of a rack but I have too much to keep under the bathroom sink.

I used the idea from the video but with my own measurements.

Supplies:
2 Foam Boards (2.00 each)
Exacto Knife (1.50)
Glue Gun (2.99)
Glue Sticks (2.00 for a pack)
Ruler
Chalk or pencil or other erasable drawing object
Decorative Duct Tape-Optional
Total= $5.50-$10.00

I cut one of my foam boards hamburger style in half (about 15 inch)
Keep one half for the backboard
with the other half, cut two pieces for the sides at 3 inches each
Set the remaining of that board aside

with the second board, again cut it in half just like you did the first
then cut 6, 2.5 inch strips (see pic) for the top, bottom and 4 shelves
Optional: cut 1 inch strips for lips on the shelves and bottom (I didn't do this)

Glue the shelves on first using a glue gun, then glue on top and bottom, then glue on sides

Finish the look with duct tape like the video shows (optional).

Hang on the wall and TADA!

DIY Barbie House & Furniture

I will admit, although I wish I could claim the title of "crafty", I really just get most of my ideas and inspiration from Pinterest.  Here is how this one went down:

My daughter is turning four in about a month.  The only thing she has asked for is Barbie stuff.  But, seriously!!! these prices are ridiculous for the cheapo plastic stuff they are making now-a-days.  I bought a $60 dollar house for Christmas a few years ago and I swear I'm fixing something daily with that thing.

I started looking around to find something like what I had growing up: a wooden, simple, sturdy Barbie house.  On a side note, I honestly played Barbies til I was 13 (then Sims came out...which is virtual Barbies). I remember everything I loved about my house and it wasn't the house itself, it was the details!  The little pillows, rugs, and curtains my mom made.  The colors my dad painted it.  The fact that my dad took Christmas lights and hung them on the ceiling so my house had light :)

So what do I do?? PINTEREST!  and come up with this: Its a small bookshelf repurposed for a darling Barbie house.  (yup a blog within a blog-blogception!)  I am going to have my dad build the shelves rather than buy the shelves because I would like to be able to control the depth of the house.

Next thing I do? Blog my progress!  Below is my very pitiful attempt at the "blue prints"

Third thing was to start shopping.  I went to the local thrift store and found the following for a total of $4.00:

On the left is what will soon be the fireplace (painted black with flames and logs), I will be putting deco on the fireplace too

Next is the bed (an old sleigh decoration).  Now my problem is the bed is too small...so I'm at a loss for now.

The grey box is like a jewelry box with a place for a photo at the top.  I want to put silvery/reflective stuff in the picture part and paint the box black..then TADA! An AWESOME coffee table that Barbie can use to store her couch blankets

Below that is the top of the soon to be dining table. Will paint it either black or cherry red depending on cost and what I can find.

some stuffing (aka fake snow) for all my cushions.

Then below that is kelly's night stand ( I love it! and it also has storage space for kelly to put some books in for bedtime reading)

Then I found the coasters on the end and thought I could somehow make a pool for the rooftop.

My favorite part:
I decided the best way to save money on fabric for the pillows, comforters, window curtains and rugs was the use fabric laying around...but wait! I don't sew often so I really don't have a lot of fabric around.  Then it dawned on me! I have a couple of boxes laying around with my daughter's baby clothes...what could make better fabric??? I can't wait til she is old enough to understand how special those clothes are to me (if you can't tell, I'm proud I came up with this idea). Plus the whole idea of a diy barbie house is to personalize it.

While researching, I ran across this woman who makes  TONS of Barbie stuff from mostly cardboard and it looks fabulous! The rest of this blog is really a compilation of her videos as a guide for what I'm using to make my furniture.

Good luck in your crafty adventours! I'll keep you all updated on my progress :)

I will be making the master bed by using her video found here (this woman is absolutely GENIUS):

Stacy and Kelly will be sharing a room.  I have a bed for Kelly though...however, Stacey often has Skipper over for a sleep over.  Thank goodness there is this video:

Lamps will be used by following this video:
